For most, failure hurts and can hobble. But, for Adam Rippon, figure-skating
champion and comedian and writer, Esther Povitsky, the pain of rejection and
failure served as fuel for their insatiable desire to succeed. You’ll hear
from them today as they speak with Alexandra Wilson of Forbes. You’ll also
hear from the guy who brought Facebook to its knees, whistleblower, Chris
Wylie, formerly of Cambridge Analytica. He speaks with Thomas Brewster of
Forbes. Both these conversations took place at the 2018 Forbes Under-30
Summit.

Around the same time Sister Cathy went missing in 1969, Father Maskell started
looking for a confidential secretary. Student Lil Hughes (Knipp) agreed to
fill this position. Some episode corrections: Lil has 7 siblings, not 8. Her
dad was in the service but was home for Christmas. When Lil mentioned that
those who work in a private school has access to a lot of information, she
would like to clarify that files are kept confidential HOWEVER she believes Fr
Maskell bullied the nuns at the school and acted as though he was the person
in charge. This provided him with access to private and confidential

Ronald William Brown was a ventriloquist puppeteer on a television program
called Joy Junction, a variety show on the Christian Television Network. Last
year he received a 20-year sentence for child pornography charges, but the
real story is much more disturbing. Brown along with 42 others were netted in
a child porn sting that spanned two continents and perpetrators from every
walk of life. Believe it or not, the worst part of the story isn't that these
individuals wanted to molest children. Instead, their online chat logs
revealed a deep desire to murder, mutilate and eat their corpses too. Brown
even had a particular victim in mind, a boy that attended his local church.
The horrific level of detail in their plans is captured in the eerily benign
nature of their back and forth dialog, which has been recreated using computer
voices for this program. Sword and Scale has never released a show this
disturbing, so if you are sensitive to topics like this please do not listen.

In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, we are talking about “Untold: The
Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist" out now on Netflix. Host Rebecca Lavoie
interviews directors Ryan Duffy and Tony Vainuku.
Notre Dame’s Manti T’eo was already one of college football’s biggest stars.
His stature grew when he revealed his longtime girlfriend died at the
beginning of his senior season. But on the eve of going pro, reporters
uncovered his online girlfriend never existed. At a time when the public
hadn’t heard of catfishing, football fans were left to wonder how T’eo could
be duped by someone he never met…or whether he was actually in on the hoax.
SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched “Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't
Exist" yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.

As legend goes, in 1562, King Philip II needed a miracle. So he commissioned
one from a highly-skilled clockmaker. In this short, a king's deal with God
leads to an intricate mechanical creation, and Jad heads to the Smithsonian to
investigate.
When the 17-year-old crown prince of Spain, Don Carlos, fell down a set of
stairs in 1562, he threw his whole country into a state of uncertainty about
the future. Especially his father, King Philip II, who despite being the most
powerful man in the world, was helpless in the face of his heir's terrible
head wound. When none of the leading remedies of the day--bleeding,
blistering, purging, or drilling--helped, the king enlisted the help of a
relic...the corpse of a local holy man who had died 100 years earlier. Then,
Philip II promised that if God saved his son, he'd repay him with a miracle of
his own.
http://arts.vcu.edu/sculpture/portfolios/elizabeth-
king/" target="new">Elizabeth King, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, describes how--
according to legend--Philip II held up his end of the bargain with the help of
a renowned clockmaker and an intricate invention. Jad and Latif head to the
Smithsonian to meet curator Carlene E. Stephens, who shows them the inner
workings of a nearly 450-year-old monkbot.
